Byron,

I was posting my comment, because I had the very similar message in my log 
file:
       scsi: 0 hosts

After upgrading to the C53 kernel it all loaded automatically.

BTW I have disabled in my 2930U  all the BIOS related stuff. (this was 
based on my assumption that a MIPS processor could not run BIOS code which 
is Intel code.)
