I would like to configure Sendmail to use a couple of blacklists in order to
reduce the amount of spam received. I found some instructions at
http://list.cobalt.com/pipermail/cobalt-developers/2003-April/039145.html which
involved modifying the file cobalt.mc by adding a couple of FEATURE commands,
recompiling it with m4 and using the result to replace the sendmail.cf file.
I tried this and it did reduce the amount of spam quite a lot. Unfortunately, it
also killed all the mailing lists on my server. Anyone posting a message to any
of the mailing lists got a 550 "unknown user" response. So I reverted to my
original sendmail.cf file.
I guess this means that the original sendmail.cf file was not derived from
cobalt.mc. The new sendmail.cf was actually shorter than the old one, so I guess
the old one must have some extra stuff to handle mailing lists correctly.
Does anyone know how a solution? Maybe one of:
1. Is there another .mc file somewhere from which the original sendmail.cf
really is derived?
2. Is there something that has to be added to cobalt.mc to make mailing lists
work properly?
3. It occurred to me that I could copy the lines to do with blacklists that got
inserted in the new sendmail.cf file (which are at the bottom of the
"check_relay" section) and paste them into the corresponding section of the
original sendmail.cf file. However, I can't work out how to copy lines from one
file to another using vi. The manual says to put the cursor at the start of the
block to be copied and press v or V to enter visual mode, then move to the end
of the block and press y; but when I am running vi (through putty), pressing v
or V does nothing except bleep.
All solutions gratefully received!
