Hi,
Just thought I would tell my story in case there are any out there
interested...
On Saturday I updated to version 1.0 of the 16623 proftpd update and it
busted FTP... Guess Sun uploaded the wrong patch version...
Patch version 2.0 on Tuesday fixed it for like 80% of the servers. Not
mine... The version 2.0 patch seems real solid and well tested, but it
seems to choke about 20% of the time if the proftpd.conf file has a
misplaced line due to some odd reason...
FTP is not critical on my hobby server, so I could wait for the dust to
settle. Today things seemed all figured out.
Since I am not a Linux guru, I called the USA sun help at 1-800-526-0484
and mentioned "I have a problem with patch 16623" which lets them know that
it is that "no charge" thing ;-)) I don't think I was the first person to
call :o))))
Gave the usual information and waited on hold and stuff for about 10 minutes.
Then the nice guy was able to log onto my server with the admin password
and "just fixed it" in a few minutes ;-))) I tried FTP and it was all fixed!!
In a few cases, like mine, some line in the proftpd.conf was out of order
that kept the new patch from working still. My machine is Plain Jane stock
(certainly no third party stuff)... But whatever... Everything is all
fixed, sort of like magic :-))
I want to thank Sun for how they handle this!!! Yeah... something screwed
up, but that happens, and they did everything they could to fix it. The
Cobalt allows even a dummy like me to do wonderful things!! I love
it!!! Too bad they discontinued it, but maybe, when times are better, they
will have something better! But I think the existing Cobalts will be
around for many years to come ;-))
Now I see I have a critical update on the %^$^*(! windows machine... So
I'll end while I am still happy ;-)))
Cheers,
Terry
