I disabled the virtual-site entry and that worked, so the other way around should also work.
Apart from that, suddenly users get an error message when ftp-in:
550 index.php: Overwrite permission denied
I substituted the old proftpd for the new one and the problem disappears...
not really a solution, but a workaround.
Personally I don't have that problem, and we were both using the same software and settings. (just a different login account)
