Thanks for the posts over the last couple months about what exactly a
Qube 2 could and could not do, how much I could trust it, etc.
I looked at the capabilities of the CobaltOS, looked at NetBSD 1.6.1,
and NetBSD finally won out. I can put in a big HD, have a much more
secure box, many more up-to-date services, and there are 4000+
ready-to-use sources via pkgsrc which seem very current, and many many
precompiled binaries ready to install for NetBSD. I've been worried
about the services especially and it was like a weight coming off my
shoulders to look at the NetBSD software and see the latest versions of
Proftpd, sendmail, etc. etc. sitting there, ported, ready to go, all
up-to-date.
Since I can now drop in a big IDE drive, my big external SCSI drive can
be used for easy backups of the whole filesystem.
Plus I can easily use neat toys^H^H^H^H TOOLS like IceCast which would
not happen for CobaltIOS (I think).
Thanks to Shon and his GigaCube page <http://www.shon.org/qube/> for
mention of the pre-built .iso booter for network install of NetBSD on
Qube 2 and Raq1 units; the NetBSD/cobalt support pages still list (as
far as I can see) the "hard way" to get it done. The net booter .iso
worked a treat.
After the new year holiday I finally had time to set this system up; I
think this will be great. I really wanted to keep the CobaltOS on it,
but it seemed it was going to be a lot of work, and I just could not
see how it would easily end up as secure or as featured as the
alternative, in my hands.
Thanks again; and I"m sure I'm not done skimming the list for content.
