5. A completely NEW distribution (Qbalt etc..) is probably my least favorite idea, but there are many flaws in Cobalt's distribution thatcould be fixed. It would be great if you could take the best of Debian andthe ease of the Cobalt UI and merge them into a single unifieddistribution, but since Cobalt's stuff was originally based on RedHat Ithink you would have much better luck with Fedora.Sometimes starting from scratch makes more sense. As long as the concept of the clean GUI is kept in tact, I am happy.
That's the concept behind Qbalt; completely new interface (as the Cobalt UI codebase is somewhat aged and limited, I don't really wish to work with it), but it certainly takes lessons from the Cobalt interface. It has the same look, feel, and simplicity, but the backend is far more flexible.
Good news, too - looks like my internet situation's about to be resolved, which is what has been delaying Qbalt for the past few months (release was definitely going to occur before the end of the year, but I ran into a brick wall).
