Just to be sure, have you done an md5 on the login shell used by root?
On my full patched (offline) test server I have:
d991c33ebe55fc100ab0602f3b639f25 /bin/sh
and:
8b75f21667c5f00f16d9ed620a1704c4 /bin/su
Also, you might want to double-check that root is using /bin/sh in your
/etc/passwd
If all that's OK, then it certainly sounds odd :-/
