try;
cat /var/log/messages | grep syslog
On a RaQ550 shows this;
Dec 28 04:02:07 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 28 04:02:11 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 28 04:02:13 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 28 04:03:16 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 28 04:03:17 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 28 04:03:17 fsn1 syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Not sure why it is restarting so many times, but looks like one or more of
the scripts in /etc/cron.daily does it
