The serial is part of the SOA record. It is usually in db.domain.com,
or pri.domain.com - There should be one file for each domain. The file
is usually in /etc/named or /var/named -- I don't know for sure on a
raq3 or raq4. It is handled automatically by the database which is not
necessarily a good thing. Don't know if the number is stored in the
database or just read from the files.
Oddly, it is not settable from the web face. Forgetting to increment
the serial number is one of the most common and annoying
problems. Back on other systems I adopted the common practice of using
yyyyddmmnn so today the first change we be 2003121201 and then add one
for any more chanes. I think the raqs just keep adding one until it
works or something ... I'd love to know.
