Well /etc/syslog.conf looks just file with the following lines as it should:
# Log all the mail messages in one place.
mail.* /var/log/maillog
Any other ideas?

first thing I would look at is your /etc/syslog.conf,,. I have seen some
strange /stupid changes made...
