Tar is a commonly used linux tool, it is an archive creator, so the process is
probably backing up or storing some data.
Can you check who/what is running the process
(do a ps -aux when ssh'd in)
and see which user is running the process.
It may be an indication that an overnight backup process has frozen or had
problems.
