I've had this trouble on a stock 550 too. It was the webalizer stats 
directory that caused the trouble for me.  I'd just ssh in to the stats 
folder and renamed the .htaccess file to something like BAK.htaccess, then 
enabled frontpage in the GUI, and the renamed BAK.htaccess to .htaccess.
