Cant comment on the perldesk problem, it may have to do with the
cgiwrapper mechanism on the cobalts. If the package expects to run as
root, you will have to disable cgiwrap, as is currently being discuessed
in a different thread. I run into this problem with more perl written
applications which run fine on cgiwrapper-less systems like the Qube3,
but fail when they are run in the user-context [ and attempt to access
various system files ]
