OK, I had a look at the manual instructions at
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=936187&forum_id=108433
and I noticed it uses GCC.  I had set gcc to 444 on this test server as
a security issu a million years ago duing some exploit worm that cobalt
had no fix to.

Once I changed it back to 700 all is well.  I hope this helps anyone
else in the same boat.
