I believe you can edit /etc/mail/virtusertable to say

name@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx[tab]       error:nouser No such user here

I haven't tried that.

I don't use any catchall just because of that. Spammer dictionary
attacks are quite a PIA.

I am confused though -- which of these is correct?

makemap hash /etc/mail/virtusertable < /etc/mail/virtusertable
* or *
makemap hash /etc/mail/virtusertable.db < /etc/virtusertable
