I did, but there seem not to be a mysql.so in /usr/lib/apache/php?!

Did you try looking in your 'PHPSRC' directory, where you did
your "make"?
Also, IIRC, it does NOT put it there, it makes a new directory
for extensions with the newer software.
Try looking in:
/usr/lib/php/extensions/
Or in that directory's sub directory ... it may be in there.
