Solved the problem
When typing df -ah I got this:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 726M 654M 72M 96% / none 0 0 0 - /proc /dev/hda3 194M 100M 94M 52% /var /dev/hda4 13G 2.0G 10G 15% /home none 0 0 0 - /dev/pts
I had remembered a post saying that there are huge problems when /dev/hda1 reached the mid 90%'s. So I ran Bassi's usr2home.sh ( http://www.raqateers.com/downloads/usr2home.sh ) and resolved the issue.
Now /dev/hda1 is at 90% and the virtual sites are now available. I will not feel like I have fully resolved the issue -- until I get that partition down to 80% but for now I can sleep easy.
Thanks for the patience. Sorry for the unnecessary post -- and thank god for this huge list with very detailed answers. I hope that my lesson can help future frustrated admin's. I'm not sure that there are other posts associating bind, named & a full filesystem.
Thanks in advance,
Ray Archie
