When you say you can connect from the slave via command line, do you mean
you can telnet (or somesuch) and then connect to mysql once you have created
a command line session on the master?
If so, then good news! Your problem's easily solved.
You need to create a new user in mysql for username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx - chances
are that the user you are trying to connect as is set up as user@localhost
which means that MySQL will deny any attempts to connect as this user from
outside the box.
Hope that makes sense.
