Ram is essential..
However, we're running a RaQ4 with 512, and this week we had a
brown-out due to a large download from a site that manages a
simpler 10 Gb a month.
The server was totally unavailable, even pings, for about 10
minutes and then came back as if nothing had happened.
After a bit of log-oggling it appears as if a double request for
a large (40MB) file across HTTP was the root of the cause -
probably a user double-clicked a link.
I'd guess that this was down to using HTTP, we're going to be
recommending a change to FTP, and keeping fingers crossed..
Does anyone know why Apache or the network services would hiccup
so severely for what is apparently a simple cause?
Take it easy,
Chris
