I had that error on some of my servers.
I think it was caused by Sun pkg that would
not install the first time without fixing the
duplicates in the virtusertable.
To fix it:
chmod 600 /etc/sasldb
As a result of that same pkg install error
the sendmail.cf was missing the line below IIRC:
# Pop-before-smtp secondary access hash
Kpopauth hash -a<MATCH> /etc/mail/popip.db
