So *that's* what uPNP is used for ..?

No kidding, seems absolutely silly - is it another one of those Microsoft
"innovations" where even though it does make things a lot easier, it leaves
gaping big security holes?

Do requests need to be 'confirmed' on the firewall, or is it completely
transparent and any application can do it?
