No, it didn't get hot at all, just indicated that a fan was bad, so
we replaced all 6 of them.

This particular XTR only has one drive, it's our development (XTR)
machine.

I've no idea if it is applicable to an XTR, but I have seen an occasion
where a fan had been replaced and was inducing electrical noise on a power
rail, causing hangs, boot errors etc. on the machine. Changed the fan again
and the machine ran just fine.
We just figured it must have been dumping something onto the rails which the
machine just couldn't handle.
