I've decided to upgrade (convert) my RaQ XTR to the 550 OS. My method
for doing so: I bought a RaQ 3 from Gerald at raqware.com. I'm going
to spend a few days setting up the RaQ 3 to run what I now have on the
XTR and move everything over, make sure it works, upgrade the XTR to
the 550 OS then move everything back.
I have two or three (or two dozen) steps that I really need to
clarify. I made a lot of mistakes when I first set up the XTR. I had
the ethernet assignments backward. I used IPs for multiple hosts
instead of just names. I never figured out how to make my main site
come up as www.saratoga.lib.ny.us instead of rewriting to
sir-barton.saratoga.lib.ny.us. I'd like to set it up so that webmail
and other web pages requiring a login use https. I'd like to configure
the new server to use LDAP even though the old one didn't.
I have hardware questions: Are ethernet 0 and 1 going to be treated
the same by the 550 OS so I need to use ethernet 0. I have a few SCSI
drives with the scsi-II narrow 50 pin connectors kicking around, can I
actually use them with an adaptor on the RaQ3 - will the RaQ 3
recognize them at all with the 550OS - I don't believe any 500 has scsi?.
Even though my plan is to move everything over and back, should I have
both machines on the network at the same time? Maybe give the new
machine a different ip address and slowly move over of the
functions. Are any of the migration tools really useful.
I am relying on a lot (I didn't realize how much until I started
checking) of software I compiled. I'm using Amanda for backup, Squid
and SquidGuard, I compiled Perl 5.6 and have two versions on the XTR,
one used by the webface and 5.6 in /opt for use by web pages and
scripts. I compiled sudo. I also have a 3rd party packages for
OpenSSH, MySQL, OpenWebMail, some of these are included. I don't know
if I will be able to use the packages as provided even if available
because of configuration changes I needed to make.
Has anyone ever done this sort of thing? Got suggestions?
