I had a similar problem to this the other day.
DNS for the site was all set up fine, and the situation was the same as you
are experiencing.
When I checked the email settings for the user on the vsite, they had set an
Email Forwarding address, which was actually forwarding back into their mail
account. They had created some sort of loop. I removed the Forward email
address and restarted sendmail and the problem went away.

I'm not sure how relevant that is, but it might be worth checking for a
similar loop situation.
