Tom is on the right track... I see the header files are in
/usr/include/mysql
IIRC, though, PHP wants them in
/path/to/mysql/include
As root, let's try:
cd /home/mysql
ln -s /usr/include/mysql include
ln -s /usr/lib/mysql lib
and compile PHP using
--directory=/home/mysql
Let us know how that goes.
