hey list,
i'm preparing to do a brain transplant on my poor little raq2. i'm
looking for critiques and suggestions on the following set of actions
to see if i'm missing something or should do something better. i'll
post specific questions at the bottom. my reasons for doing this are
nasty errors and widespread file corruption that is after
investigation, i'm certain, the precursor to a complete drive failure.
step 1 fsck from home
i'm going to fsck my /var and /home drives tonight over ssh.
step 2 fsck at the colo
then, when i arrive at the colo, using my handy dandy computer without
drives, i'm going to boot from Knoppix (live filesystem on a cd) and
run fsck on the / partition.
step 3
once i'm all fsck'd (which i really am at this point anyhow) time to
"ghost" my drive onto a fresh 20 gb drive, using dd as described by
gerald here:

step 4
put the new drive in and pray.
my questions are:
should i run e2fsck or just plain ol' fsck?
are there any options and switches that would greatly enhance any of
the operations i have described?
anyone have a similar experience to share or pitfall to avoid?
thanks so much for the suggestions guys. i'll be doing all of this
stuff around 10 or 11 am edt tomorrow so speak up if you know something
i don't (probable). much love and thanks.
