Hello me again ;-)
Well I posted ALL of what I have done along with everything the fine people
on this list have suggested onto the Cobalt Forum! So far- I have found one
other person that has the same exact problem and he finally gave in and
called cobalt and paid the $95. It is still in escalations! And all of the
cobalt people are currently stumped ;-( Although They have written me and
let me know that this may be a bug! And that most people just haven't found
it yet. Hopefully there is some kind of fix, otherwise I am going to have to
suffer through moving all of these customers to a new server.
Just for reference, here is what I posted on the Cobalt Forum:
Hello,
First, I am new to the board and I have searched for my issue extensively
BUT I was unable to find anything. Hence my post ;-)
Alright:
I will try to make this as brief as possible. I have tried so much to get
this fixed myself and I need to detail what exactly I have done so far. Bare
with me,,
Friday (5-16) I created some accounts on my RAQ550 (fully patched machine-
running extra packages that consist of openwebmail, awstats, webalizer and
phpmyadmin.
Account Domain's looked like: (we will use test for privacy issues)
1. www.test.com
2. www.test2.com
3. temp05162003.temp.ourdomain.com (I create these for people who haven't
gotten the DNS swung over and need access to the server before then)
Everything seemed to be fine! But,, Monday I come in and for some reason all
accounts on the machine cannot add users or Alias's. Plus to make things
worse people cannot send mail to each other within the same domain. Hmm,, ok
So, I mosey on over to the /etc/mail directory and take a look at the
"virtusertable" with VI.. Sure enough it is corrupted ;-( NOT GOOD. So,,
this is what I decided to do..
1. I ran "makemap hash /etc/mail/virtusertable < /etc/mail/virtusertable"
and received this error (makemap: /etc/mail/virtusertable: line 1: line too
long (1024 bytes max) All the way to Line 70..
2. Figuring that the first 70 Lines are corrupted I proceed to make a back
up of the current "virtusertable" file. CP virtusertable
virtusertable.backup
3. I decide to edit the "virtusertable" file and delete the first 70 lines
like so: 70 dd Didn't work. Hmm,, must have to do this line by line. OK: 1
dd By doing that it deleted everything!
4. Alright, so then I will run "makemap hash /etc/mail/virtusertable <
/etc/mail/virtusertable" again! It went through with no error's but it did
not populate the "virtusertable" file Argghhh.. What next.
5. Ahhhh,, there are two backup files called virtusertable.backup.1 and
virtusertable.backup.2 Both were dated for May 8th. So, I backed them up:
virtusertable.backup.1-0516-2003 and virtusertable.backup.2-05162003 and
then proceeded to restore the backup that looked most recent like this. "mv
virtusertable.backup.2 virtusertable" then I ran "makemap hash
/etc/mail/virtusertable < /etc/mail/virtusertable" I took a look at what I
did with VI and the file looked normail once again. So, I Proceeded to try
and create an account and still I was unable to do so. Rebooted the server
and then did this whole process all over again with the
"virtusertable.backup.1" backup file. Still did not work ;-(
6. What the heck do I do now? Hmmm lets try this list of commands
-makemap hash -u virtusertable.db
-mv virtusertable virtusertable.orig
-makemap hash -u virtusertable.db > virtusertable
And this time I received some results. The first command returned TONS of
stuff. Then I ran down to command 2, and then command 3. Now, when I edit
the "virtusertable" there is a WAY more info in it. Yiippeee! Ok now I think
that it is fixed.. HAHA Yeah right..
7. Now what? Grrrr Well lets delete the last account I created on Friday..
Now we try to add a new account. Ughh,, I get an error that say's "Unable To
Create Mail Alias" OK,, I will just add that later and proceed with the
account creation. Sure enough it created but, I tried to add an email alias
on the new account and it failed. Pretty frustrated at this point LOL
8. Lets Leave my new test account and try to add another account altogether!
This time I get a flat out "Unable To create Account"
Summary:
It looks as though people within the same domain can send email to each
other now and existing accounts can create new users and email alias's BUT,
I am unable to create new accounts on the server. OH,, and when I do try to
create a new account I get this error "Unable To Create The UserServices
Object" (this finally comes up after all that I have done!)
Note:
When I went through the current "virtusertable" file (the file that was
created after all of that mess above) I did see this error for ever domain
on the server: "@www.allofthedomains.com error:nouser No such user here" Is
this normal?
Question:
What is the world can I do now? Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thank You,
Matt
