I use BlueLinQ to identify what patches are needed and then compare that
with the list above to see where to start. I download all the appropriate
updates/patches in advance and apply them from a local source rather than
over the internet.

That could be a problem. I'd expect the RAID software to want equal
partition sizes. I'd use matching disks.
