Personally I have never had any success using those pkg files.
generally my experience is that I end up with a BAD ROM, which
means it has to be replaced!
This phenomena usually occurs when trying to move form the
Linux 2.4x ROMs to the Linux 2.2x ROMS or vice-versa

I always use the flashtool.
