If you had spaces vs. tabs wrong I think you would get an error when you
try to restart sendmail, if you did it from the commandline.

Yes. That is correct. If you paste it in via Putty (anyway), tabs get converted to spaces (default) and you get an error. I don't know about other SSH clients.
