I know about using ls, that doesn't appear to accomplish anything...I
get the "PORT command successful" but then nothing - no results, it
doesn't crash the whole system at least :-|
dir is pretty common on FTP servers, and most windows FTP clients will
use it (Dreamweaver FX, for starters).

Those log entries look 'normal'
Not sure but, maybe proftpd does't like 'dir' (windows garbage)
Become a macho Linux guy and see what 'ls' does.
