[cobalt-users] Server slowing down...... FIXED

Hi All,

The discussion about the CPU getting busy, and things going weird. I solved it on my RAQ4i today.

I noticed the temperature had risen since yesterday from 58 to 67 degrees. So I rushed down to my COLO and took a look and found that both cooling fans were bad, one was stopped and the other was running rough. I cracked open the case, pulled out the cooling fans and left the cover open while I ran to the local store to get replacements. I couldn't find 3.5 cm cooling fans so bought two 4cm fans and wire-wrapped them on the back of the server over the holes. While the cover was off the temperature went down to 45 degrees. Once I got the fans working and the cover on the temperature has dropped to about 30 degrees.

What is even more interesting is the fact that with the drop in the temperature the CPU load went from a high of about .5 to .6 down to .33 and last I checked was running at .2 . And I am following the traffic flow through my port at the COLO and my traffic has also dropped considerably.

I appears that the higher temperatures was creating higher CPU activities which created higher temperatures which ..... And that seems to be the reason that services were shutting down, and the server was locking up.

I'm monitoring the server for a few days but hope that I've solved the problem. Two $8 cooling fans did the job. I'd still like to find the proper size ones and get them installed inside. But for now I've got a 'cool' server and things aren't crashing.

Hope this is of help to those with similar issues.
