I was wondering. A client asked me wheter it is possible to host a websiteon a server say server a. And host the dns and pop3 accounts at his cobalt. Is this possible ? And if so how does he need to set it all up.
Sure. We've got POP3 and local DNS for our users here on our Qube3, and our website at our ISP (who uses RaQs, but I'm not sure if our site is on one.) Note that this is not the DNS responding for our domain...
Our ISP handles DNS for our domain. The MX record for ourdomain.com points to our Qube's FQDN; the records for www.ourdomain.com points to the server in their data center. Easy as breathing, at least for me since I don't have to do the DNS. :-)
Creating the pop3 users and dns entries etc.
The POP3 users are managed by me on our Qube - users are just the concern of the machine admin, so if that's not you, you don't worry about it. You just point the MX to his Cobalt, and that's where the mail goes; he worries about local delivery.
I don't know why he would want to do his own DNS if his website is with you, particularly if he's not set up to monitor his machine 24/7. (Like you are with your DNS servers, right?) Unless he's not planning to answer for his domain?
