You can use a 30GB drive or Seagate 40GB drives can be configured for 32GB.
AFAIK a drive image won't work. You will end up with the same size drive.
I would do a backup, install the new drive, then use an OSRCD on the Qube.
Then do a restore of your backup. The backup/restore works well on a Qube.
