Dan has had that offer in place for a long time. And as far as I know, no
legitimate compromise has ever been reported.

That's one way to see it. I think he is proud of how well-written and
secure his software is and he's trying to let others know they should be
confident running it. Many people swear by his software and many more do
not like his software or him due to certain things he's done. But in any
case, it's probably well worth the $500 for him since he's effectively
challenging the world to provide him QA/QC that will cost no more than $500.
Not a bad deal if you ask me!
