For the archives, since I couldn't find it myself when I looked:
Hold down the left arrow key while powering up the XTR to toggle the
serial console port ON or OFF.
The serial console port is on the right as you look at the back of the
XTR, nearest the ethernet ports.
The other serial port is for miscellaneous devices like a UPS or
modem, etc.
