Ah!  I have 30 sites.

Another problem I've noticed - I can overwrite existing files while
using FTP, but cannot upload new files as admin - could this be
related?

Is there any way I can change the settings so that I can FTP as admin
rather than having to log into each site individually to upload new
files?
