Well.. I guess being a LAN consultant and dealing with more desktop
and File Server related issues than most people in the forum may have
it's benefits at times.

For what it's worth, from time-to-time I end up finding out the stupidest
little thing I over looked causes me the biggest problems and frustrations.

Well back to your problem..  Since it seems that your other XP computer
is connecting fine.. take a step back and compare notes or rather computer
against computer.

Are the network settings different on one vs. the other?

Are you logging in as a different user?

Are you accidentally using CAPS on one and not the other?

I think you get the drift.. at this point the balls pretty much back in your
court and your the only one that is likely to be able to figure out what the
difference is between the two computers.

If you've been hitting it as hard as you make it sound maybe it's time to
call it a night and hit it in the morning fresh..  If your anything like me
it may
jump out of the darkness tonight and hit you on face while your sleeping.
It never
fails with me.. that that's what happens 9 out of 10 times.

embarrassed, but after trying to connect from my laptop, I got on.  Now I'm
totally confused.  Both computers are running xp pro, and both have all the

Just taking a wild stab in the dark here.. but have you checked your XP
computer and made sure that you have all of the nearly 100 patches installed
that have been issued for it?  There may be a possibility that some little
piece in the WinXP O/S is what is the culprit.

Alternately.. do you have any Win2K or NT 4.0 computers hanging around that
you can see if you get the same results?  Just another thought.. you might
even try the same test with a different WinXP computer to see if it's
specific to only the computer you are testing with.

Sorry if I'm out in left field on this.. I came into your topic a bit late
in the game.

I am using XP Pro.  I'm just going to give up and accept that Sun can't
make a product that works without a ton of tweaking.  I may as well have
setup another XP box to serve the purpose of the Qube3.  At least I'd
know what was going on.

I am managing a small mixed (9x XP pro) LAN with no problems mounting
smb
shares. Don't remember doing anything special to access smb share on the
qube 3 pro. Set it up through the qube GUI. User names and passwords are
the same for win and qube. Can browse or map drives using "net use".
Hand
edited hosts files on win and qube. No WINS. No domains, just
workgroups.
HTH. Which xp are you running home/pro?

Recently installed a print server primarily for the pc users. I thought
I
would configure the qube last since it would only rarely print. I was
surprised that after using the GUI to add the printers that they
immediately showed up in network neighborhood/places.
