My first build I used the gui and created my sites (40+), called each one
www.domain.x.y with auto dns
My Linux guru was horrified at all the eht0 aliases and said use name based
vhosts - "Nobody uses ip based vhosts"
(none of mine need their own cert or anon ftp)
My next build (I got to try out the CD-Restore but that's another story) I
did dns first with:
an A record for domain.x.y, all on the same ip with
a CNAME for www
an MX record for our av/spam smart relay host and
a cname for site.domain.x.y
Then I did the sites without auto dns and called each one site.domain.x.y
with
web alias www.domain.x.y
web alias domain.x.y
That was all great for the 40+ I did (except when browsing by ip I get the
first one on the list)
Each one displays at http://domain.x.y and http://www.domain.x.y and shows
http://site.domain.x.y in the address bar.
I'm happy with that.
A couple of days later I added a couple more in the same way. Exactly the
same way!
However, names resolve but sites don't display!
Should I really be using ip vhosts? Should it matter (apart from ssl/ftp)
Suddenly its working right. (I removed all the dns for the troubled one and
made them again on their own ip).
Have I answered my own question?
Forget all of the above and go with what works?
Should I have even bothered the list with this?
Uhoh - now the other one has gone off - I'm trapped in a dns/http war
Will I mow the lawn/wash the car *this* weekend?
