Abe, you can optimize sendmail.cf, disable all unnecessary services,
increase RAM, reduce load by moving other services to another box and other
typical solutions.  You probably know that Sendmail and MJ are not the best
combo for large lists and the RaQ4 hardware is relatively slow compared to
today's vanilla boxes.

It shouldn't take that long.  What kind of delay is there in processing
regular email?  Sendmail can use some help ensuring that email sent to the
same mail server (same domain name) is sent via a single envelope or
envelopes handling up to X recipients per email.  By installing a program
like bulk_mailer and piping list email through it delivery time can be
reduced significantly.  See http://freshmeat.net/projects/bulkmailer/.  Note
that there are other similar programs, but I don't recall the names offhand.
