Don't put the "*." at the front. Just the TLD:
ru
cz
Or for domain-level blocks:
spammer.ru
badguys.cz
Or the one bad server (yeah, right!):
mail.spammer.ru
Or the one bad spammer email address (don't we all wish!):
spammer@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
