One can just "telnet brattain.com 25" and see the message
You might want to check the setting of the SmtpGreetingMessage parameter in
your /etc/sendmail.cf file and make sure it is not "corrupted". Also check
your DNS settings. On my test it answers "ns1.brattain.com" on close, but
gives the weird helo message your reference. Here is what I show for the
Greeting variables:
RAQ4
# SMTP initial login message (old $e macro)
O SmtpGreetingMessage=$?{if_name}${if_name}$|$j$. Sendmail $v/$Z; $b
Qube3
# SMTP initial login message (old $e macro)
O SmtpGreetingMessage=$j Sendmail $v/$Z; $b
The $j parameter is set near the top of the sendmail.cf file and is generally
commented out:
# ... define this only if sendmail cannot automatically determine your domain
#Dj$w.Foo.COM
You might check this and see....
