Just out of curiosity, Andy... is the site (or are the sites) with this
problem very large?  Or is at least one of the sites on the box very
large?

We're seeing the problem with large sites and we think it has something
to do with the split_logs functionality.  We'll be testing direct
writing of logs to the site-dependent log for large sites within the
next few days and hopefully we'll remember to report back on what we
find.
