Good thinking, but sendmail is set up to disallow relaying by any host
that you don't specifically authorize in /etc/mail/access with a line
like:
myfriend.com RELAY

Check your virtual sites for an insecure formmail.pl or other means of
sending mail via a web form.
I don't think straight telnet is your problem...
