I was wondering if it is because it doesnt look throgh the .htaccess
file (I dont get a login popup). that could explain the 401 error.
Am I totally wrong here or?

the /admin page is redirected to the https page
You probably blocked the port somewhere in your updates
Did you do anything with ipchains?
Did you do the update from sun or did you do a custom update of apache?
maybe you did not turn https back on
It probably is you apache update
