As many in this list are aware the power supplys in the Raq's are not
suited
for 7200RPM drives and even some of the newer 5400 RPM drives as I recently
found out (System couldn't power up two New 20GB 5400 RPM Maxtor drives).
Know of a larger PS that will fit the RaQ? I think I posted my experiences
to the list a few months back, maybe not, but I bought (20) Maxtor 30GB
5400rpm drives earlier this year only to determine the hard way that they
draw too much power. On paper the specs are fine, both cold start current
draw and operating current draw, but clearly the RaQ PS can't provide enough
juice to boot the machine. Interestingly enough, unplugging one or both fans
temporarily for about 10 seconds after you flip the switch would do the
trick and get the machine going.
Any way because of the power issue and not being terribly fond of a
software
RAID the Accusys product looks like if might be the best alternative since
it uses 2 2.5" Notebook drives mounted to a 3.5" drive sled.
If you try it, please post your results, I'm interested.
