Thanks a million for your help. I really appreciate it. Good news! I did
figure out my problem (after about 8 hours of intense stress last night and
today) with this article.

Who knew it would be so simple. I almost started re-creating the postgres
database! Luckily I stumbled on that article. So now if anyone can tell me
why a /tmp directory would just disappear, that would be MOST helpful.
