I have changed it already - my question really related to why I should even ask the upstream for a new netmask, why not simply enter 255.255.255.0?
I'm now clear on the netmask messing with the number of useable IPs, I am less clear why it was configured as a .248 when I told them this server would probably require 48 IPs in total before I was through.
Also, given the IP space I was going to use on the machine, why wouldn't I simply use .0 to have an unlimited range of IPs once I've been allocated them?
Cheers - Greg
