Absolutely. The RAQ3/4 restoration CDs will continue to work properly even
with the update ROM version.

Again, not a problem. However, it means you lose the added bonuses the
update ROM supplies you. A prime example: you will no longer be able to use
2.4x based kernels if you revert to the original ROM version. Be forewarned
though; if you upgrade the ROM, install the 550.OS, do not revert back to
your previous ROM version. It'll leave you in an unbootable position which
will require some proper disk exchanging on planning. ;)

So yes, it's still possible to complete revert back to your original
out-of-the-box configuration if you've made proper backups of your inital
ROM image and have the OS restoration CD.
