The front page of the site is interesting in its
instantssl comments.

The GeoTrust rep I talked to today said the freessl site was what
GeoTrust setup to send people to when they asked about instantssl.com and the price
difference.

What I thought was weird was how the freessl site spins the chained cert as being
an inferior product (like non-sslv2 compatible - its not really a current issue) and how the
certs are for low-volume, test and development sites.

Just exactly how does one 128-bit SSL
certificate as opposed to another affect the volume of data it can encrypt? how can a true 128-
bit SSL cert be dev/test quality as opposed to production quality?

also, why is the website
so cheesy? 2 products linking to the same faq? using a non-distributed CA so that a cert install
box pops uppon ordering?

Its like every single element of the site is meant to discourage the
customer from realizing that a chained cert is equally valid to a root-level one and that they
are dealing with a sub-standard product.

so, rather than going with the $15 certs, I decided
that I would rather pay $45 for a decent experience.

Oh yeah, instantssl.com gives you
unlimited free live phone support for generation/installation, free lost cert
regeneration and free CSR corrections.

Of course if you look at it from the top-3 CA
standpoint, they probably arent differing their products on technology as much as the value-
added identity verification which means a lot in a corporate liability
environment.
